Beneteau / Moorings 38M design review
Understanding “Beneteau speak” can be challenging. The following is an attempt to decipher the mysteries of the Beneteau 38M:
38M: M stands for Moorings, who contracted with Beneteau USA to build a 38’ boat for the Moorings charter fleet from 1990 to 1992. Approximately 90 hulls were built at the Beneteau USA plant in Marion SC over the three-year period.
First 38s5: Beneteau used the same base hull design by Jean Berret for the First 38s5 and the 38M. First refers to Beneteau’s performance oriented line of boats. The “S” refers to the famous designer of the boat’s interior, Philippe Starck. The 38M has a different deck, keel, rudder and mast than the 38s5.
Conclusion: the 38M is a better sailing boat than the average Moorings charter boat.
