The NEW J/121 (pronounced 1-2-1), an offshore capable, 40’ speedster for a crew of 5 or less – the best short-handed J ever! Attached please find the initial information that will also be posted on jboats.com at the time of the news release.
Hull and deck plugs will be milled later this fall in Bristol, RI and the J/121 will quickly take shape at CCF Composites alongside the rest of the speedster line-up (J/70, J/88 and J/111). The target production schedule has hull #1 sailing in New England next summer, #2 heading to the Great Lakes and subsequent production initially at 1 per month, ramping up to 2 per month by the fall.
We are currently reserving production slots with a $25k hull reservation deposit which is fully refundable pending client approval of the final specification & pricing (December 1st). In the meantime, for discussion purposes with clients, we’ve been estimating an in-the-water price of $475k ($375k for the boat and $100k for sails, electronics, commissioning).
We see a huge untapped market for the J/121, especially as people continue to cycle out of crew intensive, logistics-laden programs that are too expensive and time-consuming. This design is the answer for those seeking a boat that offers compelling performance with less crew, all-around sailing versatility, low maintenance, and is fully ocean capable to be delivered on its own bottom anywhere. The J/121 is a return to the shared adventure, sail-with-friends style of sailing and racing that’s more memorable and meaningful than the specialized, athletic W/L racing that’s succeeded mostly in establishing a pecking order that’s impossible to crack. The J/121 will readily appeal to our core J/owner base as the design hits on all the key hot buttons, but we also see attracting new entrants to the sport who are drawn to turnkey adventure sailing with a pre-planned event schedule and readily available support only the J/Network can provide.
