Projected PHRF ratings for the new Beneteau First 35 & 40

Below is a report from Vice President of Farr Yacht Design, Jim Schmicker:

“For PHRF we would expect the First 35 in “One Design” configuration (105% LP headsail and 103m^2 spinnaker on a pole) to have a handicap 3 s/m faster than he Beneteau First 36.7. If the 36.7 is typically 78 then the First 35 would be 75.”

“For the First 40 we would expect the “One Design” configuration (105% LP headsail and 132m^2 spinnaker on a pole) to have a handicap 3 s/m slower than the J/122. So if the J/122 has a handicap of 33 then the First 40 would be 36. If you add the 155% LP headsail to the First 40 then the handicap would be 9 s/m faster or 27.”

Jim also commented on the Beneteau First 40: “I was also speaking with a North Sails guy from Denmark that said the First 40 (named BM Yachting) was winning everything under both IRC and ORCi in Germany.”
