When Hurricane Earl trucked up the Eastern Seaboard two weeks ago, it seemed certain that it would at least sideswipe New England. The dire predictions of 100-plus-knot winds were soon revised downwards to 50-knot winds, but still had many owners scrambling to have their boats hauled and others securing their charges as best they could.
