Boat Review: Lagoon 50
A game changer in every sense of the word

Anyone under the impression that change in today’s production catamarans is about little more than cosmetics needs to check out the Lagoon 50—an all-new design that went on to become the winner in the 40 to 50ft cruising multihull category in SAIL’s 2019 Best Boats awards.
Design & Construction
VPLP designed the Lagoon 50 along with Patrick Le Quement. Over the years, Lagoons have become more angular with hard lines to their transoms and a downward slope to the coachroof, which creates a perception of movement. At first glance, the wrap-around glazed vertical windows look continuous. But in fact, they’re made up of panels and provide a terrific view from inside. Weight has been kept low through the use of vacuum infusion, with balsa coring above the waterline and in the deck. Spars are aluminum, and the mast has been moved aft, which helps prevent hobby-horsing and gives the boat a shorter boom, thereby making the mainsail that much easier to handle, especially shorthanded.

Nothing kills innovation faster than incremental improvement. Maybe that’s why nothing inspires it like a clean sheet of paper. Kudos to Lagoon for understanding that and tossing out preconceived notions. With the launch of the new Lagoon 50, the French catamaran builder tapped into true innovation in a world of evolutionary lookalikes.

Big and roomy, Lagoon’s new 50 footer is also easy to handle.

The all-new VPLP-designed Lagoon 50 takes full advantage of the latest technology to keep sailing simple.
At a press event during the Miami International Boat Show last winter, the Lagoon 50 was described by a company spokeswoman as being “the most open-minded catamaran on the market.” That’s a statement that could be taken in a number of ways.
First, there are the multiple social areas encompassed by the boat’s 48-foot-5-inch LOA and 26-foot-7-inch beam. There are dining tables indoors and out, lounge areas astern and forward. Overhead, the flybridge offers more room to gather or get away. The crew could sunbathe on cushions that store in a locker built into the Bimini, or take a seat by the wheel and help out with the sailing, though, to be honest, with autopilot, a self-tacking jib and electric winches at your fingertips, it’s possible to keep things simple. Then again, roll out the optional genoa and sheet it home, and things can get sporty, real quick.

I have heard owners of the Lagoon 450 (who happen to love their boats but are ready to upgrade) say that the NEW Lagoon 50 is the perfect compromise between the hugely popular 450 model and the Lagoon 52. It is a very attractive option for owners ready to step up to a large and easy to sail owner’s boat.
Cabin Layouts and Owner’s Suite
This catamaran has quite simply one of the best designed interiors and aft cockpit layouts on the market. It has unparalleled accommodation possibilities, available in three to six cabins, with the third cabin inboard of each hull and surprisingly, even with that many cabins, it does not feel cramped, although 4 cabins in my opinion would be better if one opts for the owner’s version. The owners cabin is truly luxurious with a walk-around queen bed, a walk-in closet option and a bathroom with seperate toilet, shower and vanity areas and double sinks. The closet space with plenty of hanging space, is more than ample. The natural light streaming in the through the panoramic windows is wonderful and makes all the cabins light and airy.

With two completely new designs launching this winter in North America, Lagoon Catamarans continues to innovate and push the boundaries of what it means to build production cruising catamarans.
The new Lagoon 50 is a massive 50-footer with a full fly bridge and a huge cockpit with ample room for entertaining. The huge windows in the hulls provide a true indoor-outdoor cruising experience. The 50 fits neatly between the successful 450 and 52.
